Storage Management–Microsoft iSCSI Using VMM 2012 R2

 

Hey folks, time to check out on storage management using VMM 2012 R2 (Preview Edition). With Windows Server 2012 R2 (Preview Edition) or Win 2012, we can now setup MS iSCSI Target roles. Now what’s the different? Well, if your iSCSI target is running Windows Server 2012 R2, you’re no longer require to separate install SMI-S Provider in order to use VMM to manage it. SMI-S Provider is now built-in together with Windows Server 2012 R2.

With VMM 2012 R2, we can manage Microsoft iSCSI as part of your fabric management. To do so,

Requirement

a) Setup Windows Server 2012 R2

b) Add MS iSCSI Roles

Configuration

a) Click on Fabric Workspace | Storage | Provider | Right click and select Add Storage Devices

b) On Select Provider Type page, Add it by using Storage Devices Wizard and select “SAN and NAS devices discovered and managed by a SMI-S Provider

c) Select Protocol “SMI-S WMI”, enter the provider ip address or FQDN and select Run As Account.

d) VMM will perform deep scan to detect your microsoft iSCSI Target

e) Once detected, tick your storage pool and assign the type of classification

f) Click Finish to add the storage provider.

Verification

a) Click on Storage | Array and

b) Click on Storage | Classification

That’s should do the trick and you can use VMM to manage the storage for deployment.
